A second dream was fulfilled beginning in 1881, just four years after Peary graduated from Bowdoin College, with his purchase of Eagle Island in Casco Bay . Eagle Island is the principal subject of this web site. Our purpose is to acquaint you with the Island (now a Maine State Historic Site) and the remarkable man who owned it. We are the Friends of Peary's Eagle Island . We were established in 1992 as a non-profit and all volunteer organization. We work hand-in-glove with the Maine Bureau of Parks & Lands to maintain the Island and Peary's house in an historically accurate manner, and to make it as accessible and instructive as possible to the hundreds of visitors each summer. We always welcome new members and invite you to join our group of dedicated volunteers. In the pages reached by the linkages at the left you will find much more information as well as links to other sites related to Admiral Peary and Arctic exploration in general. We encourage you to visit and enjoy an Eagle Island adventure. SPECIAL NOTES: The ghostly ship in the header above is the S.S. Roosevelt, the ship that took Peary to the Arctic. Click Here for a fascinating story about this "Very Special Ship"..An excellent print of the ship is now available, at a price of $95. Go to The Trading Post for more information and an order form There's an interesting story about the Admiral's motto: Inveniam viam aut faciam. See if you can find it in one of our links. Our logo shows the Island properly oriented with the compass rose. The long promontory points roughly north east. The aerial photo is looking southward so that you can see the house location, almost as the pilot house of a large ship. |
