Eagle Island is a magical place on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean on Casco Bay with ocean views in every direction, a sandy beach, and walking trails opening onto memorable vistas. Robert E. Peary fell in love with the island as a student at Portland High School, and he purchased it soon after graduating from Bowdoin. In 1904 he built the main cottage which he modified later into the larger house that exists today pretty much as the Pearys left it. Called by Peary and his descendants their “Promised Land”, the cottage displays much of the material that Admiral Peary collected over his life-time. This special place benefits each summer from the care and attention of dedicated volunteers.
Our 2008 summer volunteer program for Eagle Island is taking shape and once again we need your help as a docent for the house and gardens, as a worker on Trail Day, or as a member of the crew of Workdays for Four. Please review the enclosed information and return sign-up sheets for any or all of these volunteer opportunities. Don’t hesitate to sign up for multiple days or tasks! We need the following:
50 persons for Docent Days so that we have two docents in the house on Saturday and Sunday each weekend in July and August, July 4th and Sept. 1st Labor Day.

Docent appreciation & training day will be a luncheon on Saturday May 17th from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Morrill Room in Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick.. We will schedule docent days on the spot so bring your calendar. Docent materials will be distributed and the new audio tour wands demonstrated. However, if you can’t make the luncheon, please return your volunteer sheet nonetheless. We will call to arrange for you to receive materials and set dates.
